A Day at the Aquarium

Description:

"In the 1964 book, Flat Stanley Adventure, by James Brown, Stanley is "made flat" when a heavy bulletin board falls on him. He is able to visit friends because he can be folded and placed in an envelope to be mailed." This was a collaborative project, each student in the class patricipated by taking Flat Stanley out to have fun, go on an adventurer or just to relax.

Skills Learned:

Digital cameras have been around for some time now, but I never really had a reason to use one. There was always someone else to take pictures and we all didn't need to take pictures of the same things. This project provided practice in taking pictures using digital photography and manipulating them to make them web ready. Cropping pictures and getting them ready for the web was new to me. Picnik was a very simple yet powerful tool for editing. Digital photography and manipulating photos will be a resourceful skill for me.

Process:

We each received a copy of Flat Stanley. It was my responsibility to dress and groom him and take him out on an adventurer. The options were open. After getting Flat Stanley all dressed up, I had to think through what we might do through out the days and weeks ahead. I soon learned that we had lots of opportunities. I took pictures of him everywhere we went. Once our adventurer was complete, the pictures had to be cropped to become web ready. I then created a Podcast of his adventurer so that everyone else could enjoy it.

Reflection:

Flat Stanley had a way of making the kid inside of you come out. I had decisions to make, what would he wear, what type of adventurer would we go, did we want to help someone else, or just have fun. Flat Stanley and I spent a lot of time together. He visited my job, my family and hung out with some of my friends. Everywhere Flat Stanley traveled it generated a conversation. I used the conversations as an opportunity to share Flat Stanley's story. How wonderful it would be if people in the world could relate to each other the same way Flat Stanley brings people together.

This experience provided a great opportunity to be a creative thinker, have a good laugh and enjoy some good old fashion fun. I found that it was important to always be prepared because opportunity could knock at any moment.

The challenging part was making sure that the pictures were cropped to the correct size to be web ready and uploading them successfully.
